INSPIRATION
Art and Design Schools, Universities and Colleges require a practical art portfolio in addition to meeting its academic requirements as part of their application process. Producing an art portfolio will not be taken lightly because it plays a crucial role for each school office of admissions to determine students' acceptance and to be considered for merit scholarships in the program.
Thus, strategically planned and prepared portfolio will give the best chance of being accepted and become a cornerstone of college education. Many art schools have precise portfolio presentation requirements that are often different and have different expectations.
(The criteria set out below are based on the admission requirement of the current academic year)
Portfolio Requirement of Universities in the United States:
The amount of artwork pieces to have in students' portfolio varies by the university requirement. Most of the times it is within 20 pieces.

When I first attended Spotcolor Institute I had no idea what to expect, or what I could get out of it. All I knew was that I needed help putting together a portfolio for college. This place has changed my life. They not only hone in on your skills and challenge you, but they also guide you to look outside the fine art realm and understand what your potential truly is. Without their help, I wouldn't have made it to where I am today. I encourage anyone who wants a future in the arts to go to Spotcolor Institute. Thank you Soo Kim for guiding me and encouraging me in your own way :)

I would definitely recommend Spotcolor Institute to anyone who is passionate about art and who wants to develop their portfolio for art school. This institute definitely know how to prepare you in skills and creativity as well as find what your strengths are to pursue in the future.
I came here in my 2nd semester junior year of high school and they helped me create my portfolio for all the schools (Soo Kim gives you a list of good art schools for you to research and find the 10 best schools that you think will suit you). And helps you with home tests, along with different techniques as well.
I was able to get into all the schools (RISD, PRATT, SAIC, CCA etc..) I have applied to, and 90% of schools I was offered scholarships.
It's a good environment with good support, and a place where they really want you to grow. I didn't know much about art careers, I just loved painting and drawing but Soo later suggested that he can see me doing more special things like interior design/architecture.
When I went off to college and took 2Ds and 3D classes, I realized he was right. I graduated RISD in 2012, and I am working at a top 100 interior architecture firm in NYC. I am thankful and grateful that I went to Spotcolor Institute.
It was like my escape from school, from stress. It was more than an after school for me. They really care. They will really push you, and make you a strong artist/ designer. (we still keep in contact here and there, the teachers there are great mentors!)

Spotcolor Institute is a great place that has helped me create the strongest portfolio for my college applications! Not only are all the teachers extremely kind, knowledgeable, and passionate, they are so comfortable to approach and I honestly made the greatest memories here. Everyone works hard together and the atmosphere right before applications can be stressful, but it really felt like a family--the support and encouragement you get is amazing. Thank you Spotcolor Institute! :)

I would not be where I am if it weren't for Spotcolor Institute. This place didn't only help me get on my feet, but rather broadened my perspective for continual growth.
I cannot thank Mr Soo Kim enough. With his mentor ship, I got into ranking architecture school, finished it, and I now work in Corp firm. I did not picture that before Spotcolor Institute.

This is an amazing institute with a great, caring owner. He even gave me some caring advice on my future career, and even for grad schools.
I also loved all the teachers there, they were very helpful and I've learned a lot from them.

I'm so glad that I came here because it really helped me out a lot. I learned a lot from the teachers here and I was able to come out of the institute with a portfolio that I was proud of. There is no better place than Spotcolor Institute can put you in your future school. Perfect portfolio up to your major. Unlike other places, this institute not only teach art but also design your life. I can not thank enough my teachers who have changed me to be a designer. It will be a life changing experience to attend this institute. I was nothing but a kid before I walk in to this place, but after attending this place. I started to think what I am capable with and what I want to be.

I started coming to Spotcolor Institute out of sheer hobby of the fine arts during middle school.
It wasn't until my sophomore year in high school I switched my dream of becoming an RN into becoming an artist.
Director Soo Kim was one of my mentors all throughout high school who helped me find a path towards my theater career. I had no idea what theatre design was about until I started a close relationship with my director here at Spotcolor Institute.
Coming to Spotcolor Institute was one of the best decisions in my high school career.
The teachers here not only help improve your technique, but they cultivate your creativity and push for your own originality. Spotcolor Institute provides a lot of reliable resources as well as connections from Spotcolor Institute alumni and their respective successes in their design career. I learned some of the most useful life skills such as building your own resume, website, and portfolio. The teachers are more than happy to help you, especially during that rough season where high school seniors are applying to college universities.
I came in here from knowing close to nothing about design, and now I currently go to USC for theatre design with an emphasis in costumes and expect to graduate in 2017. I wouldn't be where I would be now, at my dream school, without the guidance and counseling from Spotcolor Institute of Art & Design. Thanks Mr. Kim!

I feel extremely grateful for the teachers who have taught me throughout the years I've been here. Alongside the teachers, this institute has everything you would need to strengthen yourself for drawing and designing. There are even great resources and inspirations all over the place for students. What impressed me the most was how Soo Kim, the head of the Irvine location, had so much knowledge about so many different majors, even ones that I've never heard of before. He and the other teachers helped me through so much to prepare myself and my portfolio and even continue to aid me and other students after I stopped studying here. I really recommend this institute for beginners and even anyone who wants to study any kind of art with the help of great teachers.

Spotcolor Institute of Art & Design's Irvine Branch is a very strong portfolio building program that has greatly progressed my views and skills with art.
In just a single year this institute has prepared not only my artistic skill, but also for college application and insightful knowledge about the art world in general.
Their program is rather rigorous, especially for a late starter like myself. But the instructors care deeply for both the students and their work, and were supportive in every way. The owner is also very knowledgeable about most fields of visual arts, and will not hesitate to teach all of the foundations necessary for college and after.
One thing that I will say is that there is no set curriculum directly tailored to each individual major/field, but instead is a program teaching you the basic foundations of art and design, then branches out a little into an area of interest. Personally I did not have a problem; it was actually very enriching to go through this process.
I would definitely recommend anyone who would like a starting education in art to go here.

Awesome place to learn all different aspects of creative art. No matter what level you are at, just bring your passion and dream and Spotcolor Institute will do the rest to get you better than where you start.
I sure experienced this first hand and I'm really glad I met Spotcolor Institute when I started going for my dream career in theatre.

I was a college graduate when I started my art/design education at Spotcolor Institute. I decided to start all over, to become an Architect/Designer. I am fortunate and glad that I chose Spotcolor Institute over any other art/design prep institutions in LA/OC to achieve my dream. Of course, Spotcolor Institute prepares students with great portfolios to be accepted at prestigious art programs, colleges and universities across the nation. There is no doubt about it. What separates Spotcolor Institute from any other institutions is that Mr. Kim and the instructors at this institution educate students the knowledge and understanding of art that will carry the students through college or even through graduate school. The techniques are easy to be mastered in time. Decent portfolios can be prepared/produced with the help of instructors. Nonetheless, most places do not emphasize/teach the attitude and the philosophy of art/design. This is very crucial because admission tickets for college or graduate school is not everything. Lessons learned from Spotcolor Institute are invaluable, they are something that I will carry on for the rest of my life. I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards Mr. Kim and the instructors of Spotcolor Institute.

Before I went to this institution, I have visited several different institutions for counseling. However, when I had a counseling at Spotcolor Institute with Mr Soo Kim, I knew that Spotcolor Institute will guide me to the right direction and my belief turned out to be true. In the beginning, although I had had some experience in drawing and painting, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, but throughout continuous mentorship, I was able to find what I want to do. I really feel grateful to all of instructors.
